Rather than being an attempt at a balanced all-round headphone like the DT880, the Beyerdynamic DT990 is instead a unique sound experience in its own right. Like the DT880, the DT990 comes with the same excellent leather headband, plush velour earpads and an all-metal construction. The 'grill' on either side is an added bonus, and makes for a more impressive headphone than Beyer's other models.
As for the sound, the area in which the DT990 absolutely excels is low-end separation. Every single detail and nuance of the low end of the spectrum is perfectly reproduced, with detail beyond that of the DT880, the K701 or even the HD650. There is complete and utter separation of every part of the low-end, and with each song the DT990 provides new unheard details to the listener. Every grunt, every bassline and every punch of sound is present in full-force, revealed completely and utterly. Movies and games were nothing short of astonishing, with detail and power throughout. Never has an explosion sounded so good. The treble takes a back-seat, and if you think that's where it belongs, then this is the headphone for you.
The sound characteristics of a headphone can be seen as a spectrum, with headphones like the K701 and the DT880 attempting to come as closely to the middle of the spectrum as possible, with the aim of balanced, accurate sound. With the DT990, Beyerdynamic have instead sought to create a satisfying, exciting headphone with excellent bass clarity and response. This is not an attempt at the most accurate headphone in the world, but is instead an attempt at a specialised, enjoyable headphone for those looking for a full-bass experience.
